Re-Stringing

A lot has been written on the art of re-stringing, some have talked of it as a mystic lost art, done well by very few. In fact that is untrue, the basic act of re-stringing is quite simple and straight forward. The special art is the accumulated knowledge and professionalism built up over years that enables a racquet technician to arrive at a tension and string type after a quick series of questions. It may often be the unsaid just as much as the spoken word that enables the technician to get it just right. Some of the myriad of little influences that make for that special blend may include type of racquet and it's stiffness, string pattern, head size, type of player using it, is he or she a serve volleyer or base liner, attacking or defensive, are there injury problems to accommodate? Any sponsorship considerations? Any technique concerns? How often do they play on what type of courts and of course what costs are affordable? After all that the technician chooses one type from thousands available, and of course intimate knowledge of brands, models and string construction are required. This is where the true technician works for his money and makes his or herself differ from the average. At STRINGLAB we pride ourselves on taking the right amount of time and effort to get that special restring first time. After all it is you the player that is the final testament to our skills. If you haven't tried a STRINGLAB re-string before please do, it may make your tennis experience just that little bit more enjoyable.

Our most often asked question is " how often should I re-string"? and the answer is usually a little longer. For some hard hitters it's easy, re-string when it breaks. For a major % of our customers a bit more judgement is required. But I think it is very fair to say that for Tasmanian conditions, if you play once a week on average, then 18 months is the maximum that a re-string will stay at a good level. After that the string has lost more than 40% of its elasticity and even though it still looks the same, it really has done the job.

So what type of string should I use? Send us a email or come into the shop and we will help you arrive at the best decision for YOU. We all play differently, how we grip the racquet, how fast we swing, what style of tennis we play, how hard we hit, with how much spin, at what level. This is just some of the knowledge we need to gain from you, to help make the right decision.

Kids Zone

Kids are our future - it is a simple formula. Tennis provides fantastic pathways for children and here at Stringlab, we make sure that they are educated and equipped from the beginning. In store, we stock modified equipment and accessories that enable children to enjoy the game and develop the right technique from the start. It is incredibly important to ensure that children are matched to the right equipment for their age, height, physical strength and skill base. Different length racquets, low compression tennis balls, and a number of fantastic accessory tools are available to build their hand-eye coordination and early tennis skills.

LITTLE SPROUTS TENNIS® is a unique programme designed by Simonne which teaches 0-5 year olds, a wide range of locomotor, gross motor, hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, dynamic and static balance, and early tennis skills. There is method in all that is taught, but the emphasis is on fun. The children are learning through play, acquiring and building skills without really realising it. The sessions are action-packed and combine a variety of active strategies that consolidate existing skills and develop a number of other skills: physical, behavioural, social, and psychological.

Classes run year round. Programmes generally comprise five x 30 min sessions over five weeks, indoor and outdoor. Classes are capped at six children and are matched according to age initially. As long as the children can walk, they are eligible!

Offshoot products include:

  • Graduate LST Academy sessions
  • Birthday Parties
  • Holiday clinics
  • School excursions
  • Playtimes
  • Junior private/group lessons

Racquet Customisation

Racquet customisation will mean different things to each individual. To a once a week player it might mean simply matching weight, balance and dynamic swingweight to his one or two racquets. To a keen pennant competitor who is a regular player it may mean all the above plus the addition of some mass and perhaps a custom grip fit. For an aspiring tour player it may mean multiple sessions, on and off court, to find the right "stick", and then the same amount of work to make it " just right".  This process may include the taking of point by point statistics, videotaping, and match plotting.  It is about at this stage as a preference emerges that time will be spent on finding the right string and grip and other fine adjustments. For this level of player commercial considerations are often also involved such as existing sponsorship arrangements and the like.  All of this done with great attention to detail and the use of the finest equipment available, sourced from all over the world. Finally our customer leaves with a custom Stringlab racquet.
